What GRIPONE S3 is?

GRIPONE S3 is an additional ECU that work sas traction control to manage the power of engine and limit the sliding of rear tyre… but it can do even more!

Does GRIPONE S3 works only as traction control?

No, GRIPONE S3 works as traction control but also as wheelie control, launch control, pit limiter and gear quick shifter. Not all the application include the strategy of pit limiter and the strategy of quick shifter. Please reffer to the application list to check it.

What I buy when I buy GRIPONE S3?

GRIPONE S3 is available in plug & play kit. Every kit includes: one ECU, one wiring loom, +/- remote buttons, one remote led, two speed sensors, one kit of brackets for the speed sensors (the brackets are not plug & play), one USB cable (to programm the ECU), one USB memory with the software to manage the maps (XP, VISTA, WIN7, WIN8, WIN10).

How GRIPONE S3 works?

GRIPONE S3 detects the speed of both wheels, via the sensors which read the passage of the screws of the brake discs. Using these data of speed (and others) GRIPONE S3 is able to understand if the rear wheel is slipping or if the bike is wheeling. In such a case it reduces the engine power.

How GRIPONE S3 is connected to the bike?

GRIPone S3 can be connected up to 4 cylinders (via 4 coils or 4 injectors). The connection varies from bike to bike (refer to the list of applications to verify the type of connection for your bike). GRIPone S3 takes power directly from the coils or from the injectors so it does not need to bring any wires to 12volt.

Does the connection need some modification to the bike wiring loom?

No. GRIPONE S3 wiring loom is plug & play loom that can be plugged to the factory loom with original connectors.

How can I install the speed sensors?

The speed sensors (2) provided in the kit are to be placed in proximity of the brake disc (front and rear) in such a way as to detect the passage of the screws that secure the brake disc to the wheel rim. In the kit it is provided a set of universal brackets that fits generally to a wide range of models. If the brackets are not compatible with the bike, it is up to the customer to adapt them or create new ones.

How can GRIPONE S3 reduce the power of the bike?

When it should decrease the power, GRIPONE S3 cuts a certain number of firing (or injected if it is connected to the injectors) at a certain frequency. The following scheme to cut firing varies as a function of motorcycle, the number of cylinders and the power reduction percentage to be applied.

How can I adjust GRIPONE S3?

GRIPONE S3 is adjusted by sending a map from the computer to the unit (via USB cable). The plug & play kit comes GRIPONE WINSOFT software that allows the map management. The map contains many parameters, each of which varies one aspect of the operation of the controller.

How do I get (or create) a map to be sent to the control unit GRIPONE S3?

During the first installation the user can connect to our online database to the site www.gripone.com (or direct access to “Memory Stick” included in the kit) to get the “base map.” Each motorcycle model has its own base map. The map must be loaded in WINSOFT and sent to the unit via USB. It is recommended to initially use the base map. After a few tests you can change the parameters in the map to adjust the GRIPONE S3 operation according to your needs.

How can I change the map by the remote buttons on the handle bar?

GRIPONE S3 has two buttons on the handlebars, included in the kit (one green and one red). These buttons are used to vary the sensitivity of the traction control, on 3 levels: MAP TC1, TC2 MAP and MAP TC3. Besides changing the sensitivity of the traction control, the buttons can enable / disable all controls and turn on / off the pit limiter.

What is 3D-INTELLIGENCE?

3D-INTELLIGENCE is a complex calculation system included within GRIPONE S3 that allows to vary in real time the sensitivity of the control strategies (such as the traction control or the anti wheelie) automatically adapting to the conditions. 3D-INTELLIGENCE receives a continuous flow of data from the speed sensors and from the IMU inertial platform. The data are processed to determine the “dynamic state of motorcycle” (that is, if it is inclined, if it is accelerating or braking, if it is wheeling etc.). 3D-INTELLIGENCE (200 times per second) establish a safe level of wheelspin and optimize the sensitivity accordingly. It is obtained a traction control strategy that automatically adapts to the conditions.

What is the inertial platform IMU?

The inertial platform IMU is a sensor that detects accelerations along the three axes of motion (longitudinal, lateral and vertical). Accelerations provide basic data for the elaboration of 3D-INTELLIGENCE. Through the inertial platform, for example, it is able to establish the wheel loads and the bending angle of the bike.

3D-INTELLIGENCE and GRIPONE S3 can work even without inertial platform?

GRIPone S3 can be operated with and without inertial platform. With the inertial platform, 3D-INTELLIGENCE obtained directly an estimate of wheel loads and bending angle. In this case, the system gets the full support from 3D-INTELLIGENCE. Without the inertial platform, 3D-INTELLIGENCE indirectly calculates the wheel loads from the speed signal and does not process the change of sensitivity based on the angle of leaning. In this case, the 3D-INTELLIGENCE calculations are not complete at 100% (but 80%).

It ’important to have the IMU inertial platform to do good work GRIPONE S3?

Many of our customers use GRIPONE S3 without the inertial platform getting very good results. For an amateur or road use, we recommend not to buy (at least at first) the IMU inertial platform. For “advanced amateurs” and riders we recommend to equip the system with inertial platform IMU immediately.

What is GRIPONE DAM?

GRIPONE S3 has a serial data line that can be connected to the appropriate data acquisition module DAM GRIPONE. The GRIPONE DAM module connects to the GRIPONE S3 wiring via the connector marked “EX”. GRIPONE DAM does not require preliminary adjustments, it is automatically activated each time the bike is over 5 kmh and off when the bike stops. You can download the data to PC via USB cable and analyze them using the supplied software (WinSoft version 2.x.x.x).

How can I use GRIPONE DAM?

GRIPONE DAM records the trend of speed (detected by the sensors), acceleration, lean angle, slip of the rear wheel, the level of traction control, anti wheelie and more. GRIPONE DAM allows (through data analysis) to optimize the setting of GRIPONE S3, the setting of the inertial platform and check for any abnormalities. GRIPONE S3 is the leading model of the range GRIPONE. This system is designed to be complete and to ensure the user maximum freedom of adjustment. GRIPONE CHRONO-TC instead, is designed to be more simple in setting and to have a lower initial cost. GRIPONE S3 allows adjustment of all parameters that manage the control strategies (such as traction control and anti wheelie) and IMU inertial platform. GRIPONE CHRONO -TC instead limits the user to a small number of adjustment parameters (just to make it easier to use). GRIPONE S3 can function as traction control, anti wheelie, launch control, pit limiter, electronic gear shifter and it has a serial data line to connect to the data acquisition module DAM GRIPONE. GRIPONE CHRONO-TC can work only as a traction control, anti wheelie and launch control. With the GPS module can also be used as a GPS chronometer.
